Christine. I HAD SO MUCH FUN CHATTING WITH YOU. And I’m obsessed with these highlights you did. Brilliant!! Thank you thank you thank you for all your kind words!! 🥰🥰🥰
I vividly remember the day I realized that the only theological perspective I’d ever been taught was from a straight white mans perspective. How that was just *theology* but anything else was given an identifier “womans theology” or “black theology” and how furious I was about it. How disgusted I was that this was just baked into the system - patriarchy and misogyny. And things really just crumbled from there.
Oh my gosh, Christine, your maiden voyage in podcasting was a a total success! Thank you to you and Marla for wonderfully open sharing about faith and life challenges and the overcoming that happens when we leave church experiences that are harmful or at least not delivering on their promise and look for a more fulfilling life path. It was a very uplifting podcast!
Thank you so much for sharing your story! When Marla said she started reading the books that had previously scared her, I latched onto that because that’s what I’ve done. If I had previously judged a book or an author, those are the ones I’m now gravitating towards. (For example, I recently bought The Universal Christ by Richard Rohr. It’s very different from anything I was ever told, and the title previously had me thinking it was a dangerous book. It’s still kinda scary since it’s very much stepping outside of what I grew up with, but that’s precisely why I want to read it. And I’ve discovered that it’s mind-blowing and I need to read it in small chunks to digest.) Basically, if someone has been blacklisted or canceled by evangelicals, I’m now taking that as an indicator that I should check out what they have to say!
I also loved the bird imagery--flitting around happily and landing on a branch now and then but never being beholden to a single tree. I’m still in the beginning stages of my journey, so I don’t feel the freedom and peace of a bird yet, but hearing that there is peace and freedom to be had as I continue on brings hope and motivation to keep on journeying. :)
PS If Marla does interview Christine to hear her story, I know I would eagerly listen if it were to be a podcast (or eagerly read if it’s a written interview)!
Yesss that's an excellent strategy - go straight for those forbidden books 😂 because there's usually a lot of great stuff there! Ooh Universal Christ is great. Some of his earlier books were SO game-changing for me.
We'll have to figure out a time to do a reverse interview!!! Maybe in several months or something, if I don't feel weird asking Marla to interview me, or Marla, you can just ask me out of the blue. Maybe once I know I have a book on the way... ?!?!?! Thanks for your enthusiasm, Elizabeth!
This was great to listen to! Really appreciate hearing about how this shift has looked for Marla, and appreciated the honesty about how this is a long and ongoing process that has had difficult parts - I find that talking to SO many people who are very suddenly and traumatically deconstructing faith stuff while I'm much more chill about all that by this stage, but people can easily miss all the many years of turmoil that came before now 😅
Yes I loved that part too! Indeed- I feel the same about being pretty chill about it all now, but there were about ten years of a lot of angst and heartache that shouldn’t be skipped over!
